Almost "K Day"

It will be great to see some action on the Korean track after all the talk and surmising. There are still mixed messages coming out and you can read them on ESPN F1 and Autosport.com as easily as I can repeat them. There is a nice piece by a journalist on ESPN F1 about the trip and the "love" hotel, usually rented by the hour, but quite nice. The photos of the activity on the main straight remind me of a street race rather than a permanent circuit, but as long as it is ready tomorrow that's OK. I liked the quote for the organizers that "We can hardly expect to be perfect from the outset." Well yes you can actually if you know what you are doing or get the right people in to do it, which is what Tilke did in the end to get it finished. He is confident the track will stay down, and has obviously used the strongest, and most expensive, binder to lay it, but hey, it's only money.

Some of the walls look close to me and in odd spots. Liuzzi has commented on this and others say it looks like Valencia street circuit in places. As they are building a city in and around it then I guess that is what it is. It follows on Abu Dhabi where they said the moved the walls in closer, banking on the TecPro barriers to work. They may well do, but I think the drivers are a bit more cautious when the run off is less than they usually have, which results in a procession rather than a race. Did we see anyone overtake at Abu Dhabi last year?

Enough of the talk, SPEED Channel is streaming practice at 9pm EST in the US. You can work out what that is where you are, about nine hours from now. The BS stops when the rubber hits the road.

In other news, well not news, Kimi crashed again, and Hulkenburg will probably lose his ride despite a good season to Maldanado who has a wallet the size of Yamamoto's. The V8Supercars are due to race at Surfers Paradise as a replacement for IRL, shades of Long Beach when they dumped F1. V8's will be a better show, but we in the US will be unlikely to see it.

Encore Korea

"Frankly, we have not been prepared well for our F1 debut," said Yoon Keun-Sang, the PR director for the race organiser. "If we host this year's event successfully, the situation will be far different next year," he is quoted by the Bangkok Post. How is that for an understatement? Conflicting first reports coming out of Korea, but it seems the site is more like a construction site than the site of a GP. Still some people seem happy. McLaren's Phil Prew made these comments on Autosport's web site.

"I actually walked the circuit this morning with the other engineers, and I have to say I was fairly impressed with what I saw. The track itself, the kerbs and run-off and all of that sort of thing looked pretty good. The track surface itself, yes it has been recently laid, and it is a bit of an unknown. I don't think it looked too bad in terms of it wasn't particularly greasy under-foot and it looked - from what you can tell - smooth, well-laid and consistent all the way around the circuit.

In terms of how it develops and how the tyres interact with it, it is going to be guesswork. It's going to evolve, I expect, very quickly through the first session and then I think we should expect it to continue to improve all the way through qualifying and then the race."

That seems to be the key to the weekend, and there is rain forecast to make it even more of a lottery. How much will the track improve, will it stay down, and how do you set the car up, especially when it goes into parc ferme conditions. It will be a gamble, and Herman Tilke likes it like that. Again talking to Autosport, Tilke said he actually thinks that it will be a benefit for F1 fans in helping improve the show because it will be so slippery. Well why don't we make all tracks slippery then? How about ice racing, oh sorry, we already do that, but it does not seem to get much TV coverage. We are not running a circus here.

Anyway, we do not have long to wait to find out the answers to all the questions. One quote I liked was that some teams are looking forward to getting out of Korea already and heading to Brazil. Now no offense Felipe and Rubens, but I've been to Brazil, and I have never looked forward to going back.

Money and Tracks

Tony Fernandes is learning what most of us around racing already know, changes to rules cost money. They cost the car builder and the track owner money, everyone except those making the rules. I noticed this when running motorcycle GP's. I would go to meetings of the Road Racing Commission of the FIM, along with sponsors, teams and manufacturers and other track owners, and be forced to listen in silence while 16 men with not a dime invested between them discuss changes to rules. I well remember one poor soul from Yugoslavia, as it was then, who had made all the upgrades to his track as requested, and then was not given a race! He just about cut his wrists on the conference table.

The FIA and FIM keep going on about cutting costs, and then proceed to make the teams redesign the cars or motorcycles each year. And not just a little. We go from movable front wings to movable back wings next year, or has that been dropped? It is hard to keep up, let alone try and design a car for next year. The 125cc class disappears, so what happens to all those machines? Are they now so much junk?

Korea is a running sore now for Bernie, and it seems our friend Mr. Tilke is getting some flak about the lateness in completion. To put the record straight I met Peter Wahl, Managing Director for Tilke, at the Forum in New York back in April, and he said then that the Koreans only wanted them to design the track, the Koreans would build it themselves. Now it seems the Koreans are pleading that they had not built an F1 track before so should be excused for being late! I presume they knew before they started that they had not done this before. When I did Adelaide I had not done it before either, but we still got it done. I know what they mean though, it is more complicated now, but there are also people available now that know how to do it, so there is no excuse if you choose to ignore them. As I try and tell potential clients, it costs just as much to build it wrong as build it correctly, the only difference is the fee for someone like me, and that is peanuts in the scheme of things. The cost of rebuilding it, or not completing it is enormous, as the Koreans are about to find out.

If you want to see the next disaster go on the ESPNF1 web site and look at the photos of the Indian track for next years GP. They are already complaining that the weather is delaying them. When I built Eastern Creek there was a famous photo of the Minister for Sport and I under an umbrella standing in a lake it was raining so much. That was January, and we ran the first race in July. It was not pretty, but by September we ran a test for GP teams following the Oz GP at the Island. You can either get it done or you can't.

Red Flags

The Race Director, Paul Butler, who I know and respect, but have not seen him in that role personally, and the Medical Chief have both defended their decisions not to red flag the race yesterday. I know from personal experience the pressures in Race Control during an event, split second decisions that have to be lived with later. I accept that they acted in what they saw as the best interests of all the riders, just disagree that they were the right ones. The doctor said that it was safer to get Tomizawa off the track so the medics could work without bikes going by, well if you red flagged it then that would have been the case. Paul said that he kept the race going as the track was cleared quickly. I think that is the point that most of us watching were appalled about, they literally dragged those poor guys off the track, dropping Tomizawa in their haste. I know that if you asked the other riders and the spectators at home and at the track, they would rather have the delay than watch that again.

We now learn that Tomizawa had a cardiac arrest out on the track, hardly the story that was being given out to the commentators and the teams. This is where you get the feeling that "the show must go on." Not sure I would have cancelled the MotoGP race, but I might have stopped the Moto2 right there.

It's nice to read that the makers of helmets and other rider protection continue to work on improvements to prevent this type of injury. The accident itself is almost certainly unavoidable, a rider can lose the front end, or the rear as in this case, and in a pack is impossible to miss for the guys behind. Helmets are amazing already, look at Massa's survival last year, and the leathers and body armor get better all the time. I hope that something can be found to protect riders in this situation, but it is hard to see how that is possible without making them heavier or bulkier, so more dangerous than the problem we have now.

I'm not sure what Tilke is saying when he says that his track designs "will be more on the 'edge' in the future in a bid to help promote better racing and more excitement." To me it sounds as if he is going to make them less safe, but that cannot be, surely? After designing all the GP tracks for the last decade how is it he says he now knows how to make them more exciting? He defends his designs by saying he has to work to factors such as land availability, local geography and the budget that track owners are willing to put forward. Well duh! Those are the factors every designer, architect or engineer faces every day. I've never noticed the budget being a restraint for Herman, and the land and topography neither. He says that the extent of run off is dictated by the FIA, and he is correct that it moves the spectator away from the action, but I think the criticisms are about the lack of action, not that it is too far away. Apparently Bernie is giving him more rein to make the tracks interesting , and giving him some good ideas. I'm sure we all look forward to seeing them.
